Pencil Marks on Pages

I'm going through my edited manuscript page by page, looking at each little pencil mark -- scribbled words, arrows, circles, exclamation points -- trying to decipher what my editor is suggesting, trying to decide if I agree. It's hard work, but here's the thing: I love typed words on a page. I love pencil marks on a page. The other day, I had to try to help my dad set up an indoor bicycle trainer so that he could exercise after hip surgery. My work that day was all about wrenches and wing nuts and washers and quick release levers, and I did not love it. I would rather look at a typed page with pencil marks any day. Some people -- my husband among them -- love tools and tinkering. I love words on a page.

An edited paper is like a puzzle, isn't it?

I'm reading a memoir by a writer and he talks about not getting many pats on the back, so I just want to say to you, "You craft a lovely metaphor." :)
