I had lunch with my friend, Patti Stewart, who is an art quilter. (That's not her quilt, above. That's by Jane Sassaman, whose beautiul work can be see at http://www.janesassaman.com/.) Patti was explaining how your goals as an artist change over time. She was saying that someone might start out making quilt for fun or for function, but then suddenly, they decide take it to a whole new level. They want their stitches to be perfect, their fabric choices to be inspired, and they want people who appreciate those things to notice. "Why do we do art?" Patti asked, "We do art for people who appreciate it." I thought that was a rather inspired statement.

I'm an art quilter too, but started as a watercolor artist, then morphed to mixed media/collage then, as a was sewing on paper, thought, hey I can sew on cloth too! After making and teaching art quilts for the last 4 years, I'm making my VERY first functional quilt, a baby quilt, and as usual, I'm just wingin' it!
